Stress is our emotional and physical response to pressure. Such pressure can arise from external factors such as life events, work, home and family or internal factors like our self-expectations and the demands that we place on ourselves. At times even events that we see as enjoyable can become stressful: holidays, social events, parenthood.
Stress and anxiety trigger brain, emotional and physiological responses: we all know, for example, the expression of an “adrenaline rush”. Under stress the body pumps cortisol and adrenaline through the bloodstream creating a temporary state of hyper-vigilance. Recurring or habitual stress affects our emotional wellbeing and our physical health. There is a tendency to overlook or underestimate the physical manifestations of stress, that can cause illness and chronic disorders that dramatically impact the quality of everyday life.
Often, it is only at this later stage that people dealing with these challenges seek stress management and counselling.
We all have personal early and relational experiences that trigger worry or give us our own individual level of resilience or vulnerability to stress. At Leone Centre, we work with the understanding that every person’s symptoms and experience of stress will be different; we use CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and individual psychotherapy to explore and the root causes of stress and anxiety as well as working with EFT and Matrix Re-Imprinting.
Examples of physiological stress related symptoms:
- Low libido or impotence
- Insomnia and an inability to relax
- IBS, stomach cramps, constipation or diarrhoea
- Headaches, migraines
- Teeth grinding, often during sleep
- Loss of appetite
Some consequences of stress:
- Low self-esteem
- Attention deficit
- Problems in relationships
- Loss of control
- Unable to settle, always busy
- Shouting arguing
- Eating (more or less)
- Drinking more or using drugs
These affects can occur as a result of many pressures; Strain in relationships, work burdens and financial worries are reported as the primary causes, but we will always work with you and try to establish individual and unique sources.
What Is Stress Management And How Can Counselling Help?

Modern day life and living in London can be demanding, pressured, constellated with self-expectations and the expectations of others. It is now more common to experience work-related pressures and stress especially when it is hard to have boundaries from the workplace due to constant access to emails and work communications.
