About Susan Harris

I am a UKCP-registered Systemic Family Psychotherapist with over 30 years of experience supporting couples, families, children and young people across the NHS and within social care. My practice is grounded in systemic thinking, which means understanding people within the context of their family, culture, and social environment, and in helping them find new ways to connect, communicate, and thrive.

I have extensive experience in psychotherapy and systemic practice, with advanced training across leading UK institutions. I completed an Externship in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy at the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy and hold an MSc in Family and Systemic Psychotherapy from the Institute of Family Therapy. My qualifications also include a Postgraduate Diploma in Child and Young Person IAPT from King’s College London, alongside earlier studies in social work, systemic theory, and therapeutic communication from institutions such as The Tavistock Clinic, Royal Holloway, and University College London.

My approach is collaborative, creative and respectful. I work with families and couples to explore what works well in their relationships, build on existing strengths, and create space for honest conversations and new perspectives to emerge. I draw on attachment-based, emotionally focused and narrative approaches, encouraging reflection on intergenerational patterns and how these influence the present.

I work with families at different stages of life: from young people struggling with low mood, anxiety, self-harm and gender identity, to parents experiencing the challenges of perinatal mental health, relationship conflict, and the transition to parenthood as well as coparenting.

My work with couples focuses on improving communication, rebuilding trust, and increasing emotional intimacy and connection, with both heterosexual and same-sex partners.

I am mindful of difference and diversity, including age, race, gender and sexuality, and the important role these play in relationships and therapy.
