Relationship is Everything – Couples Therapy is a Reflective Space

It is easy to forget our right to happiness and fulfilment in our relationships and lives when things go wrong.

When couples start a relationship together, they often develop a belief that they must handle all they encounter alone.

You might have tried to make your relationship work or even started couples therapy in London before. Our couples counselling can help those who might not want to stay in an unfulfilled marriage, but separating from the family unit does not feel right either. Sometimes a crisis emerges and requires immediate attention.

“People change and forget to tell each other.” – Lillian Hellman

What’s Our Approach To Couple Counselling?

Our couple therapy approach is relational and collaborative, thoughtful and engaging. Our couple counselling experienced therapists uniquely design each session to be interactive and reflective and to ensure that you both feel involved and listened to.

Some of the areas we work on in couples counselling:

  • Communication and conflict resolution
  • Jealousy
  • Rekindling sexual desire
  • Divorce and separation

Our couple counselling offers a great opportunity for people in any close relationship to make sense of and to overcome the problems and challenges that inevitably occur during their lifetime together.

At Leone Centre, we work confidentially, supporting couples to make sense of the challenges that inevitably occur during the lifetime of a long-term relationship.

Will A Mutual Commitment To Couples Therapy Help?

A mutual commitment to the work will accelerate your relationship to start moving towards a stronger and more meaningful place. When both partners are active and enthusiastic about strengthening your bond with couples counselling, your relationships move towards a much better and more fulfilling place.

“Conflict is the alchemical soup that transforms raw emotion and instinct into pure gold.” – Harville Hendrix.

Our associates and specialist couple counsellors in London, Fulham or online will work with couples who are: married or not, cohabiting or not, LGBTQI+, heterosexual, in a partnership, in the process of separating or separated, or co-parenting.

Starting Marriage And Couple Counselling

We aim to offer an initial couple counselling session within one business day of your initial contact at one of our London locations in Fulham, Battersea, Victoria or Chelsea or Online.

It is not unusual for one partner in a relationship to be more reluctant to engage in couples counselling. Our counsellors use the first session to reassure couples and to provide them with an overview of the positive aspects of communicating, listening and understanding.

What Can Couples Counselling Help With?

No one decides to divorce or separate lightly. Such a decision usually involves a high degree of pain, confusion, anger and anxiety.

In our culture, we tend to view divorce and separation as a failure. Longevity is seen as the ultimate indicator of marital achievement; plenty of people who stayed in relationships that did not work have been miserable.

Emotional and financial resources can be easily dissipated in the psychological and legal costs of a harsh divorce and settlement process.

Co-parenting needs to be focused on the children rather than entangled in difficult parental dynamics or resentment.

When a relationship has run its course, in couples counselling, our therapists aim to— when we can —help it end with dignity and integrity. There is no paradox in asking a couple about the success of their breakup.

LGBTQI+ Couples Counselling

All of our couples counsellors are LGBTQI+ advocates and well-experienced working with diversity and all different sexualities, preferences and genders.

Online Couples Counselling

Thanks to technology (we use the Zoom video conferencing platform), couples can utilise the benefits of online working at Leone Centre. Whether it is full-time remote counselling work or flexible working, our couples therapists are experienced in working with couples from all over the world.

Couples Counselling FAQs

What percentage of couples remain together after therapy?

Couples therapy is a helpful process. The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy showed that 90% of couples reported improvements in their emotional health after counselling. Another study found that 66% of partners showed an improvement after counselling.

Couples look for therapy for many different reasons. With the support of an experienced therapist, they have the opportunity to learn communication skills, take stock and make decisions, manage conflict, listening to each other.

What Happens in the First Session of Couple Counselling?

In the first session of couples therapy, both partners will discuss what brings them to therapy, the issues that they are experiencing, their hopes and expectations and their ideal outcome from future sessions. At the end of this initial assessment, the counsellor will give feedback and suggest what he/she/they think is the best way ahead and make their recommendation regarding further sessions.

The initial session is also to understand whether couples counselling is the appropriate course for the couple, how the couple feels at the end of the first session and whether they felt a good level of connection to their therapist.

We are not sure if we want to stay together or separate. Should we still have couples therapy?

When couples feel they are at an uncertain stage in their relationship, counselling can support them in exploring the present context and potential decision-making. Both decisions of staying together or moving apart are extremely important and can be taken with the help and containment of an experienced practitioner and process.

Couples therapy will help partners to discuss issues and to find realistic solutions should they both want to continue being in a relationship. If the difficult decision of ending the relationship is made, counselling can ease the process and promote an amicable separation.

How do I choose a Couple Therapist?

A starting point in finding a couple’s therapist is finding a counsellor who is specifically trained in couples’ therapy in addition to their core counselling and psychotherapy core training.

Ideally, both partners would be involved in the process of choosing a therapist. Leone Centre Couples and Family Therapists often have many years of experience in the helping professions.

From our website and from speaking with the Leone Centre customer service, you can gather further information such as their therapeutic approaches, their areas of interest as well as training, professional memberships and years of experience.

You can expect a non-judgemental attitude, a proactive and relational approach towards you and the therapeutic process and a down-to-earth style of communication aimed at enhancing learning, understanding and the process of making change. A therapist will not take sides and will value both of you equally and respectfully.
